When we work with clients planning Disney World vacations, one of the first things we’re asked is how does FastPass work at Disney World. Since you’ve landed on this page, you’re probably wondering the same thing.
The first thing you’ll need to know is that the Disney World FastPass system has been replaced with Walt Disney World Lightning Lane, and while the basic program is the same, there are some differences you’ll need to understand.
When Did Disney Get Rid of the FastPass?
FastPasses were initially eliminated at Disney World in 2020. As the parks reopened following the COVID-19 closures, guests were not allowed to book FastPasses.
At the time, Disney indicated that the FastPass queues would be used to help facilitate social distancing mandates. Many pundits predicted the end of FastPasses or at least an overhaul of the system. As it turns out, they were right.
In 2021, Disney announced that FastPasses would be eliminated at Disney World in favor of the new Genie+ system. In 2024, Walt Disney World Genie+ became Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass.
Multi Pass operates in a similar manner to FastPasses, allowing you to skip the regular queue line by booking a ride window on popular attractions. Instead of entering through a FastPass queue, you will enter through an expedited queue called a Lightning Lane
How Does FastPass (Lightning Lane Multi Pass) Work at Disney World?
To understand how FastPasses now work at Walt Disney World, you have to understand the differences between Fastpass and Walt Disney World Multi Pass. Multi Pass does almost everything that FastPass did, with a few differences.
First, FastPass was included in the cost of your theme park ticket. Multi Pass is fee based and averages around $22 per person per day. Costs will vary depending on the day you visit each park and are commonly higher than the established base rate. You’ll also find that prices vary depending on whether you plan to park hop or visit only one park per day.
Second, the last iteration of FastPass, called FastPass+, allowed you to prebook up to 3 FastPass attractions per day, beginning 60 days before the start of your trip. With Multi Pass, you may continue to preselect up to 3 attractions per guest, per day, but the timeline has been shortened.
Guests of Disney World resorts, including Shades of Green and Swan or Dolphin, may make their preselections up to 7 days prior to arrival. Guests of all other resorts may begin making their preselctions 3 days prior to arrival.
How Does FastPass Work at Disney World (now Lightning Lane Multi Pass)
So how does FastPass (Multi Pass) work at Disney World? In theory, Multi Pass works the same as FastPasses did. Guests book a ride window to experience each attraction through a dedicated queue. Ride windows then last for an hour. For instance, if you book a 9:00 ride window on Slinky Dog Dash, you can enter the queue any time between 9:00 and 10:00.
Guests who have booked a Multi Pass reservation (formerly FastPass), enter the ride through a dedicated queue called a Lightning Lane. Since entrance to the Lightning Lane is controlled both through a paywall and Multi Pass ride windows, you will experience a shorter wait in most cases.
FastPasses, now called Multi Pass reservations, are booked through the My Disney Experience app. Follow along as we outline the steps to booking FastPasses (Multi Pass) at Disney World.
To make park reservations, visit the My Disney Experience app or log in online.
How to Book Disney World FastPass (Genie+)
Before booking a Disney World Multi Pass (FastPass) ride window, you will need to purchase the service for the day on each day you plan to use it. This can be done beginning at 7:00 am, 3-7 days before arrival, depending on where you plan to stay.
Simply log into the My Disney Experience at around 6:50 am. I then click on the “Lightning Lane Passes” tile from the home screen.
I then select the date you wish to purchase Disney World MultiPass (Multi Pass).
You will then select the first park you will be visiting that day.
You will then be asked to purchase Multi Pass. You will also have the option to purchase Single Pass if you plan to use it on that day.
You will then be asked to select everyone in your travel party.
Once you have formed you party, you will be asked to purchase Multi Pass and/or Single Pass. From there, you will be able to preselect up to 3 attractions.
Repeat this process for each day of your trip keeping in mind a couple of things. First, note that some parks observe ride tiers. Some of the most popular rides, those that tend to have the highest wait times, are in Tier One.
This means that guests may preselect only one ride from Tier one and 2 from Tier Two. You may also opt to use all 3 preselections on Tier 2 rides.
Once inside the parks, you may book another Multi Pass (formerly FastPass) reservation each time you use one. They may be booked from any tier.
For a complete explanation on booking Multi Pass, including which rides are included in each tier, visit our complete guide to Multi Pass.
Using Your Disney World Genie+ (Multi Pass) Reservation
Once your ride window opens, you may experience the attraction using your Multi Pass reservation. At each Multi Pass enabled ride or attraction, you will notice two queues. One is called the standby queue. The other is the Lightning Lane entrance.
To redeem your Multi Pass reservation (FastPass), use the Lightning Lane. You will be asked to scan your MagicBand, ticket card, or mobile device if you are using the MagicMobile pass. Once you do, your Multi Pass reservation (FastPass) will be redeemed, and your ride window will close.
At this time, you are free to make another Multi Pass reservation, or simply advance through the Lightning Lane queue and enjoy the ride.
Can I Use Walt Disney World Multi Pass on Any Ride?
When using Disney World FastPass, you were able to book almost any popular attraction. With Walt Disney World Multi Pass, you will find something different.
The majority of rides and attractions are available for booking by paying the base price for Multi Pass each day. However, a handful of the most popular attractions will require an additional purchase of an Lightning Lane Single Pass reservation.
The Single Pass works exactly the same as the Walt Disney World Multi Pass Lightning Lane. The only difference is that you will have to pay separately for it.
The Walt Disney World Genie Plus service can be purchased starting at $14.99 per person, per day (plus tax) and provides access to the following rides and attractions:
