When planning your Disney World vacation, there are several factors to consider when deciding how many days to stay.
The Size of Disney World Resort
The first factor you’ll need to consider when determining how many days to spend at Disney World is size.
Disney World resort encompasses 4 theme parks, 2 waterparks, more than 20 resort hotels and other recreational opportunities spread across over 27,000 acres. It can take 20-30 minutes just to drive from the Magic Kingdom at the northern point of the property to a resort hotel located on the farthest southern edge. If you decide to stay offsite, plan on additional time to reach the parks.
The sheer size makes it more difficult to experience over the course of a few days, compared to Disneyland, where the two parks are directly across from one another.
So Much to Experience
The next thing to consider is how much there is to see and do inside each park. While many guests consider Animal Kingdom a half day experience, they’re missing a lot of hidden surprises by ducking out early. This park could take a full day to explore and experience everything.
Other parks, such as Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, could take 2 days to take in the majority of the rides, attractions and other offerings. You may also want additional time to re-visit certain experiences such as the ultra-immersive Rise of the Resistance at Hollywood Studios or Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT. Revisiting your favorites can add an extra day to your visit.
Are You Using the Lightning Lane?
A third factor that will drastically influence how long it takes you to see and visit each of the parks, is whether you plan to purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Single Pass. Multi Pass and Single Pass allow you to book a one-hour ride window for popular attractions and then visit the experience through an expedited queue, called the Lightning Lane. Using the Lightning Lane can save you 45 minutes or more standing in line for popular attractions.
However, since access to the Ligthning Lane can cost $18 to $30 per person per day, many guests opt out of using the service. It’s certainly a valid choice but know that it will take you longer to visit each park, since you will spend more time standing in line.

How Far You Are Traveling
When we visit Disney World, we have people coming in from Utah, Oregon, Ohio and Connecticut. While those of us in the eastern United States can catch an early morning flight and arrive before noon, it can take a full day for our family in the west to reach Orlando. That means, they’ve lost a full day of park time.
When considering how long to spend at Disney World, think about the length of your travel. If you won’t arrive until evening, it might not make sense to visit the parks that day. That means you’ve essentially lost a day, so a longer trip might be necessary.
Your Budget, the Biggest Factor
Perhaps the biggest factor in determining how many days you’ll spend at Disney World is your budget. The longer you stay, the more expensive your trip will be.
However, keep in mind that Disney World often offers discounts on resort hotels or packages. Also, one of the more important factors to consider is the pricing on Disney World tickets. The per day cost drops significantly the longer you stay.
Here is one example. A four-day base ticket (one park per day) beginning on August 27, 2023, for one adult is $505.04 with taxes. That’s over $126 a day.
Extend your trip to 7 days, and the same ticket goes up to $683. That’s $97.57 a day.
If budget is a concern, think about visiting in August or September. Crowds are lighter, so ticket and hotel prices are lower, allowing you to extend your trip to more days.

Benefits of Staying for Multiple Days at Disney World
While Disney does sell single park, one-day tickets, you certainly won’t experience Disney World in a day or two. If you plan to visit all 4 parks, or even 2 or 3, a multi-day trip is in order.
But exactly how long should you stay at Disney World? Here are some options and an explanation for why you’d want to extend your stay.
Tips for Making a 5-Day Trip to Disney World Work
In general, we recommend a minimum 5-night stay, but only if you can schedule a late departure on the day you head home or an early arrival on your first day. This should give you a day to visit each of the 3 bigger parks: Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot. You’ll then have a partial day to visit Animal Kingdom.
Be sure to use our tips for visiting Magic Kingdom in a single day, found here. Also, plan ahead for which pavilions you’ll want to visit at EPCOT and which you can skip. You may not be able to do them all, depending on how much time you spend riding rides.
Hollywood Studios becomes the trickiest park to visit in a single day. With so many headliner attractions in one place, lines can get long. Be sure to arrive early (up to an hour before opening or Early Theme Park Entry), so you are one of the first groups in the park. This strategy ensures that you can hit a few of the headliners with little wait.
When taking a trip of this duration, we highly recommend purchasing Lightning Lane Multi Pass. Think about using part of the money you save by taking a shorter trip and putting it toward the Lightning Lane at Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and EPCOT.
Using the Lightning Lane makes it possible to spend less time in line, so you’ll be able to do more.
Last, skip the table service meals. While Disney offers a number of fun and immersive culinary delights at these restaurants, you’ll also spend at least an hour dining. Unless you’re a real foodie, this might not be your best use of time. Instead, pick a few fun or quirky quick-service dining locations, and eat there.
When a 6-Day Trip Might Work
Experienced Disney travelers might enjoy a shorter six day stay to Disney World. If you’ve been to the parks before and plan to hit only your favorites, you’ll have plenty of time over six days. This length of stay would also provide you with a full travel day.
If this is your first trip to Disney World, you still won’t be able to see and do it all, but you will have more breathing room with a 6-day trip. Plan to leave late on your departure day, so you can squeeze in some park time. This is an ideal day to hit the highlights at Animal Kingdom.
Taking this approach, you’ll then have 2 days to visit Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom and one full day for EPCOT. You may even be able to fit in a few hours of relaxation at your resort pool. On hot days, this can be a real refresher.
Families traveling with younger children, generally little ones under 48”, may also enjoy a 6-day stay. Some of the bigger headliner rides at Disney World have height restrictions, meaning smaller children can’t ride. By skipping these attractions, you’ll have more time to fit other experiences into your day.
However, don’t forget about parent rider swap. With parent swap, one parent can ride alone or with other eligible children in the party. When the first parent exits the ride, they can then stay with the smaller children while the other parent rides. The second parent does not have to wait in line but instead, enters the ride through an expedited queue.
Parent swap is a great way for adults in the party to experience some of Disney’s bigger attractions. However, if none of your children are tall enough to ride, they do spend a considerable time sitting in a stroller or parents expend a significant amount of energy keeping them occupied while one adult is having fun.
For that reason, parents visiting with small children will usually ignore the parent swap option or utilize it for just a few attractions. Since they aren’t riding the rides with the longer lines, 6 days is usually sufficient.
Parties with young children can spend two or even two and half days at Magic Kingdom (requires purchase of the park hopper ticket add-on), and the rest of the time between the other parks.
An 8 to 10-Day Stay Is Ideal
When deciding how many days to spend at Disney World, an 8- to 10-day stay is ideal.
By staying for a full week, you’ll have ample time to travel to Orlando as well as enough hours to experience all 4 parks without wearing yourself and your traveling companions down to a frazzle.
You can explore each park at your own pace, allowing you to truly savor the Disney experience. For example, with an 8-day stay, if you schedule an early arrival on your first day and a later departure on your last day, you can squeeze in ample park time.
Simply visit Animal Kingdom for a half day when you arrive and again on your departure day. You’ll then have 2 full days for each of the other parks. Or, you can swap a day at one of the theme parks for a water park day. You even have some wiggle room to spend a few afternoons back at your resort pool or to enjoy some table service dining.
With an 8- or 10- day stay, you can experience more of Disney World, including water parks, table service dining experiences, and mini or regular golf. You’ll still have enough time to visit all of the parks, experience the many attractions, parades and shows there, do some shopping and soak in all of the fun thematic details and surprises you will otherwise miss. You can even take afternoons to enjoy your resort and amenities or swim in the pools before heading back to the parks for the evening.
